Set up Dynamic Labels
Dynamic Labels is configured per form, in the settings of the form people fill in (the dynamic form). You select the form that holds the texts (the source form), how the source entry is found, and which source fields fill which labels.
Prepare the source form
Create a form with one Single Line Text or Paragraph Text field per text you want to show, for example a grant name, an introduction and five check questions. Add one entry per grant, course or vacancy. Staff can add entries from the front end or with Forms → Entries.
Only Single Line Text and Paragraph Text fields can be mapped by default. Developers can allow more field types with a filter.
Configure the dynamic form
- Open the dynamic form and go to Settings → Dynamic Labels.
- Select the Source Form. The page reloads and shows the other settings. Select Disabled to turn Dynamic Labels off for this form.
- Choose the Entry Matching Method (see below).
- Keep URL Parameter Key at
dynamic_label, or enter another name when that parameter is already used on your site. - Under Field Mappings, choose a Dynamic Form Field and the Source Form Field that fills it. Add a row per mapping.
- Choose the Empty Field Behavior.
- Click Save Settings.
Entry matching methods
| Method | The link contains | Dynamic Labels loads |
|---|---|---|
| Entry ID Field | the encrypted entry ID of the source entry | that entry, if it belongs to the source form |
| Unique Value Matching | an encrypted value, such as a grant code | the first source entry whose Match Field (Source Form) has that value |
Use Entry ID Field unless the link must be built from a value that is not an entry ID. For Unique Value Matching, select the source field that holds the value under Match Field (Source Form). See Link to a dynamic form for the merge tags that create both kinds of links.
What a mapping can change
Each field of the dynamic form appears in Dynamic Form Field in up to two ways:
| Choice | Changes |
|---|---|
<Field label> (ID: 4) | the field label |
Description <Field label> (ID: 4) | the field description |
Content <Field label> (ID: 7) | the content of an HTML field |
Labels are shown as plain text. Descriptions and HTML content keep basic HTML such as links, bold text and paragraphs.
Labels and descriptions can be mapped for Single Line Text, Number, Paragraph Text, Email, Hidden, Phone, Name, Date, Time, Drop Down, Radio Buttons, Checkboxes, Multi Select, Multiple Choice and List fields.
Empty Field Behavior
This setting decides what happens to a mapped field when its source value is empty, or when no source entry is found at all.
| Option | Result |
|---|---|
| Do Nothing | The field keeps the label, description or content from the form editor. |
| Hidden | The field gets the visibility Hidden and is not shown to the user. |
| Administrative | The field gets the visibility Administrative: hidden on the form, editable by admins on the entry. |
An empty description never hides a field. An empty label or empty HTML content does.
Frequently Asked Questions
The page was opened without a valid dynamic_label parameter, the parameter could not be decrypted, or the entry does not belong to the selected source form. Open the form through a link created with a :dynamic_label_param merge tag.
Yes. Each dynamic form has its own settings and mappings, so several forms can read from the same source entries.
