Advanced Merge Tags in GP Populate Anything templates

GravityWP Advanced Merge Tags works in the choice and value templates of GP Populate Anything by Gravity Wiz when you populate a field from Gravity Forms Entry objects. You can add advanced modifiers to the field merge tags of the template, and use entry merge tags like gwp_date_created for each populated entry. For example, show a choice label as Jane Doe – 04-03-2025 instead of the raw stored values.

Requirements

  • GP Populate Anything, with Gravity Forms Entry as the object type of the field you populate. Other object types (posts, users, database tables) are not supported.
  • A Custom Value template for the choice label, the choice value or the field value.

Add a modifier to an entry field

GP Populate Anything inserts a field of the entry as {gf_entry:gf_field_3}. Add the advanced modifier after the field ID, with its options:

{gf_entry:gf_field_3:gwp_case to=upper}
{gf_entry:gf_field_5:gwp_substring start=0 length=10}

The value comes from the populated entry. The field ID is looked up in the form that contains the populated field, so this works when you populate from entries of the same form, or when that form has a field with the same ID. When that form has no field with this ID, the modifier is not applied.

Use entry merge tags

Write an Advanced Merge Tags merge tag with gf_entry: before it. It is processed for each populated entry:

{gf_entry:gwp_date_created format="d-m-Y"}
{gf_entry:gwp_entry:id:gwp_encrypt}
{gf_entry:gwp_date_updated modify="+30 days" format="d-m-Y"}

For example, the template {gf_entry:gf_field_1} – {gf_entry:gwp_date_created format="d-m-Y"} shows the name in field 1 and the date the entry was created.

This is meant for the merge tags that read the entry: gwp_entry, gwp_date_created and gwp_date_updated.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which GP Populate Anything object types are supported?

Only Gravity Forms Entry; Advanced Merge Tags does not process the templates of other object types.

Why does a field with an advanced modifier not show the modified value?

Probably the form that contains the populated field has no field with that ID, for example no field 8 for {gf_entry:gf_field_8:gwp_case to=upper}; the modifier needs a field with the same ID in that form.

Can I chain several modifiers in a template?

Yes, nested modifiers work, like {gf_entry:gf_field_3:gwp_remove_accents modifier1=’gwp_case to=lower’}.
