Formatted Values in Entries, Merge Tags, GravityView and Gravity PDF
Advanced Number Field shows the value of a Number field with its display formatting after the form is submitted too: fixed point notation, crore notation and the custom unit. This page explains where that formatting is used, and how to get the plain number in a merge tag.
What is saved in the entry
The entry stores the plain number, after Force Absolute and Round the Value are applied. The fixed decimals, the crore grouping and the custom unit are not saved; they are added when the value is displayed. For a field with 2 decimals, Fixed point notation and the custom unit %, a value of 12.5 is saved as 12.5 and displayed as 12.50%.
Where the formatting is shown
| Place | Formatted value |
|---|---|
| Entry list and entry details | Yes |
Field merge tags without a modifier, such as {Discount:1}, in notifications and confirmations | Yes |
{all_fields} | Yes |
Field merge tags with a modifier, such as {Discount:1:numeric}, and {all_fields} with an option | No, the Gravity Forms value |
| GravityView | Yes, see below |
| Gravity PDF | Yes, for Number fields |
Merge tag modifiers return the plain value
When a field merge tag has a modifier, Advanced Number Field does not format the value and the modifier works as in Gravity Forms. Use this when you need the number without the custom unit, the fixed decimals or the crore grouping, for example in a calculation in another system or in a redirect URL.
For a field Discount with ID 1, 2 decimals, Fixed point notation and the custom unit %, and the value 12.5:
| Merge tag | Output |
|---|---|
{Discount:1} | 12.50% |
{Discount:1:numeric} | 12.5 |
{Discount:1:label} | Discount (the field label, as in Gravity Forms) |
Read more about modifiers in the Gravity Forms documentation.
GravityView
Number fields in a View show the same formatted value as the entry details: fixed point notation, crore notation and the custom unit.
GravityView has its own number settings for a field in a View: Format number? and Decimals. When you use one of them for a field that does not use the Currency format, GravityView formats the number itself and the Advanced Number Field formatting is not used, except for fields with a custom unit: those always show the Advanced Number Field value, with the unit. This requires GravityView 2.0 or later.
Gravity PDF
In Gravity PDF, Number fields that use an Advanced Number Field setting show the formatted value, with fixed point notation, crore notation and the custom unit.
Frequently Asked Questions
The merge tag in the notification probably has a modifier, such as :numeric or :value. Remove the modifier to show the formatted value with the unit.
No. The entry stores the plain number, so exports and calculations get the number without the unit. The unit is added when the value is displayed.
